{"id":156,"date":"2024-02-20T16:56:09","date_gmt":"2024-02-20T21:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lovelutheranlcms.com\/?p=156"},"modified":"2024-02-20T16:56:11","modified_gmt":"2024-02-20T21:56:11","slug":"sunday-february-25-2024-lessons-for-1st-sunday-of-lent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lovelutheranlcms.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/20\/sunday-february-25-2024-lessons-for-1st-sunday-of-lent\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday, February 25, 2024 Lessons for 1st Sunday of Lent"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>First Reading<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 2 Kings 2:1-12<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><sup>1&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Now when the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;was about to&nbsp;take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and&nbsp;Elisha were on their way from&nbsp;Gilgal.&nbsp;<strong><sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>And Elijah said to Elisha,&nbsp;\u201cPlease stay here, for the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;has sent me as far as Bethel.\u201d But Elisha said,&nbsp;\u201cAs the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.\u201d So they went down to Bethel.&nbsp;<strong><sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>And&nbsp;the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, \u201cDo you know that today the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;will take away your master from over you?\u201d And he said, \u201cYes, I know it; keep quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Elijah said to him, \u201cElisha,&nbsp;please stay here, for the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;has sent me to&nbsp;Jericho.\u201d But he said,&nbsp;\u201cAs the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.\u201d So they came to Jericho.&nbsp;<strong><sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, \u201cDo you know that today the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;will take away your master from over you?\u201d And he answered, \u201cYes, I know it; keep quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Then Elijah said to him,&nbsp;\u201cPlease stay here, for the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;has sent me to the Jordan.\u201d But he said, \u201cAs the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.\u201d So the two of them went on.&nbsp;<strong><sup>7&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Fifty men of&nbsp;the sons of the prophets also went and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan.&nbsp;<strong><sup>8&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>Then Elijah&nbsp;took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water,&nbsp;and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><sup>9&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, \u201cAsk what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.\u201d And Elisha said, \u201cPlease let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.\u201d&nbsp;<strong><sup>10&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>And he said, \u201cYou have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.\u201d&nbsp;<strong><sup>11&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>And as they still went on and talked, behold,&nbsp;chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.&nbsp;<strong><sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>And Elisha saw it and he cried, \u201cMy father, my father!&nbsp;The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!\u201d And he saw him no more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Epistle&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 2 Cor. 3:12-13; 4:1-6<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>12&nbsp;<\/sup>Since we have such a hope,&nbsp;we are very bold,&nbsp;<sup>13&nbsp;<\/sup>not like Moses,&nbsp;who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>1&nbsp;<\/sup>Therefore, having&nbsp;this ministry&nbsp;by the mercy of God,&nbsp;we do not lose heart.&nbsp;<sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup>But we have renounced&nbsp;disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice&nbsp;cunning or&nbsp;to tamper with God&#8217;s word, but&nbsp;by the open statement of the truth&nbsp;we would commend ourselves to everyone&#8217;s conscience in the sight of God.&nbsp;<sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup>And even&nbsp;if our gospel is veiled,&nbsp;it is veiled to&nbsp;those who are perishing.&nbsp;<sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup>In their case&nbsp;the god of this world&nbsp;has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing&nbsp;the light of&nbsp;the gospel of the glory of Christ,&nbsp;who is the image of God.&nbsp;<sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup>For what&nbsp;we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with&nbsp;ourselves as your servants&nbsp;for Jesus&#8217; sake.&nbsp;<sup>6&nbsp;<\/sup>For God, who said,&nbsp;\u201cLet light shine out of darkness,\u201d&nbsp;has shone in our hearts to give&nbsp;the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;Gospel&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Mark 9:2-9<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><sup>2&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>And after six days Jesus took with him&nbsp;Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was&nbsp;transfigured before them,&nbsp;<strong><sup>3&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>and&nbsp;his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one&nbsp;on earth could bleach them.&nbsp;<strong><sup>4&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.&nbsp;<strong><sup>5&nbsp;<\/sup><\/strong>And Peter said to Jesus,&nbsp;\u201cRabbi,&nbsp;it is good that we are here.
