{"id":150,"date":"2024-02-17T11:46:35","date_gmt":"2024-02-17T16:46:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lovelutheranlcms.com\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=150"},"modified":"2024-02-17T11:46:35","modified_gmt":"2024-02-17T16:46:35","slug":"sunday-february-25-2024-lessons-for-1st-sunday-of-lent","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/lovelutheranlcms.com\/index.php\/event\/sunday-february-25-2024-lessons-for-1st-sunday-of-lent\/","title":{"rendered":"Sunday, February 25, 2024 Lessons for 1st Sunday of Lent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>First Reading<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 2 Kings 2:1-12<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>1\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Now when the\u00a0Lord\u00a0was about to\u00a0take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and\u00a0Elisha were on their way from\u00a0Gilgal.\u00a0<strong><sup>2\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>And Elijah said to Elisha,\u00a0\u201cPlease stay here, for the\u00a0Lord\u00a0has sent me as far as Bethel.\u201d But Elisha said,\u00a0\u201cAs the\u00a0Lord\u00a0lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.\u201d So they went down to Bethel.\u00a0<strong><sup>3\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>And\u00a0the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, \u201cDo you know that today the\u00a0Lord\u00a0will take away your master from over you?\u201d And he said, \u201cYes, I know it; keep quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>4\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Elijah said to him, \u201cElisha,\u00a0please stay here, for the\u00a0Lord\u00a0has sent me to\u00a0Jericho.\u201d But he said,\u00a0\u201cAs the\u00a0Lord\u00a0lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.\u201d So they came to Jericho.\u00a0<strong><sup>5\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, \u201cDo you know that today the\u00a0Lord\u00a0will take away your master from over you?\u201d And he answered, \u201cYes, I know it; keep quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>6\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Then Elijah said to him,\u00a0\u201cPlease stay here, for the\u00a0Lord\u00a0has sent me to the Jordan.\u201d But he said, \u201cAs the\u00a0Lord\u00a0lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.\u201d So the two of them went on.\u00a0<strong><sup>7\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Fifty men of\u00a0the sons of the prophets also went and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan.\u00a0<strong><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Then Elijah\u00a0took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water,\u00a0and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground.<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>9\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, \u201cAsk what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.\u201d And Elisha said, \u201cPlease let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.\u201d\u00a0<strong><sup>10\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>And he said, \u201cYou have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.\u201d\u00a0<strong><sup>11\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>And as they still went on and talked, behold,\u00a0chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.\u00a0<strong><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>And Elisha saw it and he cried, \u201cMy father, my father!\u00a0The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!\u201d And he saw him no more.<\/p>\n<h1>Epistle\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 2 Cor. 3:12-13; 4:1-6<\/h1>\n<p><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>Since we have such a hope,\u00a0we are very bold,\u00a0<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>not like Moses,\u00a0who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end.<\/p>\n<p><sup>1\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore, having\u00a0this ministry\u00a0by the mercy of God,\u00a0we do not lose heart.\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>But we have renounced\u00a0disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice\u00a0cunning or\u00a0to tamper with God&#8217;s word, but\u00a0by the open statement of the truth\u00a0we would commend ourselves to everyone&#8217;s conscience in the sight of God.\u00a0<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>And even\u00a0if our gospel is veiled,\u00a0it is veiled to\u00a0those who are perishing.\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>In their case\u00a0the god of this world\u00a0has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing\u00a0the light of\u00a0the gospel of the glory of Christ,\u00a0who is the image of God.\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>For what\u00a0we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with\u00a0ourselves as your servants\u00a0for Jesus&#8217; sake.\u00a0<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>For God, who said,\u00a0\u201cLet light shine out of darkness,\u201d\u00a0has shone in our hearts to give\u00a0the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<h1>\u00a0Gospel\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mark 9:2-9<\/h1>\n<p><strong><sup>2\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>And after six days Jesus took with him\u00a0Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was\u00a0transfigured before them,\u00a0<strong><sup>3\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>and\u00a0his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one\u00a0on earth could bleach them.\u00a0<strong><sup>4\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.\u00a0<strong><sup>5\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>And Peter said to Jesus,\u00a0\u201cRabbi,\u00a0it is good that we are here.
